Update on SBIR Reauthorization Bill
by Rebecca Norman, Graduate Assistant, UALR Lead Center
Rick Shindell of SBIR Gateway has reported that, in a 417 to 2 vote, the House passed a bill on September 23, 2009 that will extend the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR), Commercialization Pilot Program (CPP) and many other Small Business Administration (SBA) programs through October 31, 2009.
These SBA programs were previously scheduled to be either reauthorized or closed by September 30, 2009. The SBIR reauthorization bill will not be official until the Senate votes, but this vote is expected to take place in the near future. The Senate is expected to pass the bill that allows for the one-month extension of the SBIR and other SBA programs.
The one month time frame of this short continuing resolution was a surprise to many members of the SBIR community. Short continuing resolutions add strain on the SBIR and STTR federal agencies as well as small businesses because they create an uncertain climate for the future of SBIR and STTR programs. As information is released to the public, Tech Track will provide updates on the SBIR reauthorization bill.
