ADEQ Offers Pollution Prevention Program to Small Businesses
by Cozetta Jones, Graduate Assistant, UALR Lead Center

Pollution is waste. Waste is money. You know the high cost of environmental protection. Month after month you pay to dispose of wastewater, solid waste, or even hazardous waste from your business. What if you could limit waste? Pollution Prevention (P2) is a method of reducing waste BEFORE it’s generated. P2 helps businesses by saving money and giving a competitive edge and it rewards efforts with a positive public image.

Arkansas Department of Environment Quality business assistance specialists offer businesses proven strategies that reduce pollution and reduce your costs such as: conserving water and energy by installing low-flow shower heads and toilets; reducing your environmental footprint by recycling corrugated boxes; reducing and eliminating toxic materials; and decreasing nonproductive output from processes.

The AEDQ also provides non-regulatory audits, training or workshops for your staff or your trade association, and loans for pollution prevention equipment. Pollution prevention loans are available for up to $45,000 at 80% Prime Interest Rate with loan terms up to 10 years. Eligible businesses are small businesses and farms that employ one hundred or fewer people and can prove profitability.

For more information about the Pollution Prevention program visit www.adeq.state.ar.us/poa/prog_dev.htm or call 501-682-0015.
