Christian Marketplace Makes up 57% of the U.S. Population
by Betsey Martin, Information Specialist, UALR Lead Center

Marketers, retailers and product developers are beginning to approach the Christian niche with an interest similar to that shown health and fitness enthusiasts, home gardeners and other lifestyle-defined segments.

Statistics compiled in a new resource, “EPM’s Guide to the Christian Marketplace: Selling Books, Music, Gifts and Videos to America’s 218 Million Christians,” reveal the following demographics:

- Four in 10 American adults attend church weekly
- Nearly 7-in-10 women (68%) consider religion “very important” in their lives – a gain of 6 percentage points since 1990
- In 2002, about half of U.S. adults (48%) and teens (51%) read at least one Christian book other than the Bible
- Half of U.S. teenagers participate in religious activities throughout the year
