Exporting: Reaching Untapped Markets
by Heather Robinette, Business Consultant, UALR Lead Center

Small business is big business especially when it comes to international trade. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, small or medium sized enterprises represent 97% of all U.S. companies that export.

Exporting provides businesses with expanded market potential. However, many small business owners may be unaware of the potential benefits in exporting. Others may have avoided exporting due to the additional steps involved in selling internationally. The good news is that there are plenty of resources and information especially designed to help small business become involved and stay involved in exporting.

If you are interested in learning more about exporting, the SBA offers a publication entitled "Breaking into the Trade Game: A Small Business Guide to Exporting." This publication is free at http://www.sba.gov/oit/info/index.html. For more information on exporting and export resources, contact the Arkansas Small Business Development Center at 501-324-9043.
