Boulevard Bread Company
Scott McGehee, Owner
Little Rock, Arkansas

Scott McGehee envisioned Boulevard Bread Company in 1998 after noticing a lack of European-style bread, cheese and gourmet pantry items in Little Rock. During training in California at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and eight years as apprentice chef at Chez Panisse, it was apparent that European-style breads and gourmet sandwiches had firmly taken hold of the market as leaders in growth and sales.

Boulevard Bread Company started in 1999 as a take-out, full-service gourmet bakery, coffee shop, cafe and deli. Located in "The Heights" area of Little Rock, the business sells 60 varieties of imported cheeses, olives, 20 varieties of hand-crafted artisan breads, Italian-style coffee, morning pastries, soups, salads, sandwiches, and fine Mediterranean-style pantry items.

In October 2002, Pulaski Bank & Trust referred McGehee to Phil Harris, ASBDC business consultant in the UALR Lead Center. The goal was to prepare a SBA guaranteed loan request to refinance debt and provide working capital. Harris worked closely with McGehee to prepare financial projections and the loan request. The SBA approved the guaranty request in January 2003. Boulevard Bread Company has grown consistently each year. The company currently employs 25, all of whom are committed to the success of the business and serving their customers. In early 2002, the owners opened a second location in downtown Little Rock. A third location became operational in December 2003 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campus.

During the spring of 2003, Boulevard Bread Company participated in a student consulting project conducted by undergraduates of the UALR College of Business. The student team, under supervision of Harris, conducted an analysis of the company and made recommendations to the owners based upon their findings.
